Rolle House

Rolle House is a registered Therapeutic Children’s Home specialising in caring for children and young people aged between 5 and 17 years who are Deaf or hard of hearing and have complex needs.

We can offer a safe and friendly home for up to four young people at any given time. We thoroughly assess every potential young person moving into the home against a robust impact risk assessment. This ensures the best possible opportunity for a successful move into the home for the individual, and those already living in the home.

About our communication

“All behaviour is communication”

A young person’s behaviour will communicate their needs, wants, wishes and desires.

We have a trauma informed environment that offers considered design and planning, meeting sensory needs through furniture and spaces, ensuring reduced frustration and challenges including sensory overload for our young people.

Rolle House offers a safe place that provides a variety of spaces to match the needs of young people if they need to step out and take time in a quiet area, be immersed in sensory spaces, or relax in a warm and welcoming home where they have a sense of belonging.

Young people have a right to communicate using their preferred method – At Rolle House we give choice in preferred communication method.

Communication can happen through signing, speaking, facial expression, body language, gesture, using pictures and writing. Most of the time we are using more than one strategy at a time or may switch quickly from one to the other. When there are barriers to being able to communicate and use language meaningfully, a total communication approach allows people to access information in a clear way.

About our care

Every child has a right to belong and to thrive.

At Rolle House we have developed a unique model of therapeutic practice which is embedded as a whole home approach. The model has been based on “Tillid”, a Danish word which translates as trust and faith. This is at the very heart of our approach and how we build nurturing and trusting relationships with the young people in our care.

The model is based on 10 core values, that layer in unison to create a solid approach, which is shared throughout practice in the home. A young person entering residential care will present with stored trauma and this will be experienced as a nse or strong feeling/emotion in the body. Through our approach we are able to identify their emotions and link those to the stored trauma and wrap effective language around it. This enables the young person to identify those feelings and express their thoughts and feelings with emotional literacy and language and be able to ask for the support they need until they can manage themselves independently.

Knowing oneself is one of the greatest skills you can develop; loving and accepting oneself is the greatest gifts we can possess, and that is the philosophy of “Tillid”.

About our community

Here at Rolle House, our links to the Deaf Academy and the Deaf community are foundations for our young people to build a sense of their Deaf identity and be immersed in it. Having social bonds with others that one can communicate with, allows reciprocal relationships to form and lifelong bonds in the place that we live.

The Deaf Academy has a residential provision for young people aged up to 18, and there is a Post 19 centre within walking distance that provides education and accommodation up to the age of 25. Within these three provisions, including the children’s home, we have access to joint leisure activities, outings, and clubs. This offers a broad range of extracurricular activities and time to socialise in the local vicinity.

Exmouth is a lively and pleasant seaside town that has a variety of amenities to meet the needs of its residents. It has restaurants, cafes and leisure activities, a cinema, library and a host of shops and supermarkets. All of these are within walking distance of Rolle House. There is good access to public transport and a train station that has regular trains into Exeter which is only 20 minutes away. Exeter is a large city with a university and a hub of shops and business with a host of work opportunities.

This is a great location for our young people to navigate the daily experience that is typical when growing up and becoming independent. This can be done within an interwoven community that offers a solid support network for our young people, setting them up for their independent futures where they become happy and confident adults.
