Residential Care

Residential Care at the Academy provides a safe and nurturing environment which allows our young people to become independent and develop their Deaf identity. We strive to build a comfortable and welcoming environment. We want our young people to feel at home here, with strong and trusting relationships with our staff.

This begins as soon as a young person arrives here and continues until they leave. The Residential Care team have all achieved, or are working towards, their BSL Level 3 and a Level 3 Diploma in Children’s and Young People’s Workforce.

The Academy has a great Deaf community with evening and weekend social activities helping to develop sign language and communication skills. With the support of our experienced residential care team, our residential young people develop their independent living skills to prepare them for adulthood. And all of this happens in beautiful Devon, with access to vibrant cities and leisure activity opportunities adjacent to the rolling countryside and some of the UK’s best beaches.

Children enjoy their residential experience and make timely progress because their health, education, well-being and independence skills are prioritised by the adults who care for them. Their outcomes have significantly improved since they moved to stay here.
