“All behaviour is communication”.

A child’s behaviour will communicate their needs. Being a trauma informed provision allows us to understand children’s needs and ensure these are met to allow them to develop.

Rolle House is a specialist provision that provides bimodal, effective communication, taking account of individual needs and preferred modes of communication. All adults are either trained or are in training to achieve their British Sign Language Qualifications, up to Level 3.

Ensuring all adults provide effective communication in British Sign Language, and have a high level of understanding in Deaf awareness and Deaf culture, ensures all children will have the benefit of living in a home without language barriers. Communication can happen through signing, speaking, facial expression, body language, gesture, using pictures and writing. Children have the right to communicate in their preferred method and our support keeps this in mind and is tailored to individual children.

We ensure best practice in the home by taking a holistic view across all communication needs of the children in our care. We take into consideration various aspects of day to day living and bridge the gaps where communication barriers may appear.

The environment in the home is carefully considered and informed to meet the functional aspects for the Deaf. We having flashing doorbells and have a variety of alarms that are used by Deaf adults and children giving full access which promotes independence.

The training provided for the team is thorough and covers all aspects of residential care in a therapeutic setting. Training is ongoing and bespoke to the children within our care and their ever changing needs. We have a positive relationship policy that focuses on building trusting safe relationships that are respectful and balanced with protection, guidance, care and fun.
