Welcome to our school, where young people are treated as individuals

Our young learners are supported to develop into independent and successful learners with a positive Deaf identity – ensuring they have high levels of self-esteem and confidence in themselves. All of our students are challenged to achieve excellence in academic performance whatever their ability. We aim to provide the best learning community we can by developing our students’ use of both British Sign Language (BSL) and English, written and oral.

We involve parents and carers in all aspects of their child’s education and maintain strong links via regular newsletters, the school website and, most importantly, via an open door policy for parents and carers to come and talk to us.

We hope you will find everything you need to know about our school on this website but the only true way to experience life in our school is to visit us – so, if you haven’t been here before, please take the opportunity to see for yourself the high quality education we offer – contact us at admissions@thedeafacademy.ac.uk to arrange a visit.

Our Essentials for Life Curriculum

The Deaf Academy nurtures and grows confident, resilient, and independent Deaf young people. The curriculum supports the development of resilient behaviours, knowledge and skills to excel in the wider world. Our curriculum informs everything we do across education, care, support, and the whole Academy. At the Deaf Academy we embrace the diversity of both our learners’ communication needs and support them on a journey towards a strong sense of self and a clear identity.

Our Pathways

School semi-formal pathway

These students have a bespoke, fully adapted curriculum matched to their needs. Our aim is to educate the whole child both academically and personally so each young person can express themselves, understand information from their environment and make choices. We do this by understanding their needs, harnessing their interests and finding ways to work individually with each student.  Our academic offer includes daily teaching in areas such as language and communication (phonics/early writing etc), and independence and skills for life (early maths).

School Formal Pathway

Our priority is to help students develop confidence, independence and resilience. Every student has regular direct teaching of English, Maths, British Sign Language and PSHE. Students have an exciting, broad and balanced curriculum offered to them. Through ongoing learning projects, our students acquire a wide range of skills and knowledge which they can apply in a variety of contexts. Students develop their Deaf identity and understanding of themselves and their place in the wider world.
